People read blogs with newsreaders that will pick up subscriptions to a blog through an rss(really simple syndication) feed. Every blog has an rss feed. There are rss feeds for every topic you can think of, news, pictures, politics, everything. Its the new savvy way of getting the news that interests you. That's the way I use it anyways. I love it, I use google and I have a google homepage with about 10 different subscriptions including my own blog. Every time I post a new article a link appears on my homepage with the title of the article.
That will make it so that you can keep up with many different sites updates at once through your home page once you register with one. Wordpress.com has a great introduction to blogging if you would like more information
Pick a popular one like google.
Just register for an account and also get a gmail account while you are there.
This will give you a google homepage you can use as a newsreader and customize any way you like.
If you have any questions on how to set up one of these give me an email and I would be happy to help point you in the right direction. The little chicklets that say "add google" "add yahoo" and so on are links to setting up different home pages. I like google.
Blogs tend to have a few things in common:
* An archive of older articles.
* A way for people to leave comments about the articles.
* A list of links to other related sites, sometimes called a “blogroll”.
* One or morefeeds like RSS, Atom or RDF files.

Comments secondary, IMHO. As someone said, "Blogosphere is my comments page". Permalinks are of paramount importance though. Without them, nobody can comment. You only touched on them indirectly by mentioning an archive of articles.
I found that if you read a blog post and you skip the comments you are not getting the whole story. The best content of a blog comes in the comments as long as there's good traffic and the author of the blog to also responds. I was thinking of putting a blurb in the side bar to encourage comments and feedback.
I am relatively new to the blogsphere. I have only been blogging for about 2 months now and I never realized how big the blogsphere is or that blogging has been around for years. My biggest inspiration for blogging is www.raincityguide.com I think the world of those folks and especially Dustin the tech guru. I just found out about audioblogger from Hammers blog and I plan on implementing that in different ways in the near future. I just love all the different things you can take advantage of to produce a blog and its all pretty much free. One thing I know for sure is that I am still just learning this whole blog thing. I just got my blog appearance the way I want it for now. Anyone experiencing any lag time when my page loads?
